6,7 Dihydroxybergamottin is a furanocoumarin. This ingredient is generally present in grapefruit. It is also present in bergamot oil from which it derives its name. To a lesser extent it is even available in other citrus fruits and essential oils. Consuming 6, 7 dihydroxybergamottin supplements have an affect on the metabolism of various pharmaceutical drugs. 6, 7 Dihydroxybergamottin inhibits isforms of cytochrome P450 enzyme, especially CYP3A4. It is because of this feature that the enzyme prevents oxidative metabolism of some drugs, which results in accumulation of the drug in the bloodstream.
